They definitely exist. Go to a solid semi-target (prestigious, not great for IB) and know multiple people that recruited and got nothing. They did some networking, had solid CVs, and checked all the boxes but nothing worked out. All had at least one (and some had as many as four) super days, but none were able to land an offer. Just goes to show that you can be a smart kid and do things right, but recruiting is such a shit show that nothing is guaranteed. Some landed on their feet and go great gigs in other areas of finance or tech, one is currently unemployed. Important takeaway I guess is that always be prepared for that worst case scenario and have a contingency plan for if IB doesn't work out.

 

How big of a role did coming from a semi-target play in their outcome? Do you think they would have been a (relative) lock for an offer at an actual target?
