Summer intern IB or Full time offer in RE?

hello WSO, I’m a international student in the UK and am back in my home country due to the covid situation. I am currently stuck in a dilemma regarding my career choices... You can pretty much call it a “happy problem” and I would like some advice from ppl who have way more experience than I have.

I have been offered a summer internship in one of the investment banks in UK and another offer of a full time role in a RE firm back in my home country.

Given that I will be graduating this year in July...which option would you pick? Based on the current economic backdrop and there might be little to no chance of conversion at the internship.

Do you want to be in IB, or in RE? If you want IB, it’s a serious consideration because it’s hard to go RE—>IB but easier to go IB—>RE. Also, unless you’re working at a dinky little bank that does no deals, they will still need to convert people to FT because bankers are constantly leaving for different roles.

If you know you want RE, it’s not worth it to take the risk with IB. I’d see no upside here. Given that you’re posting this, I assume you’re thinking you want IB. Only you can answer this for yourself, because this is a subjective decision. What do you value? What are your career aspirations? If you’re happier with stability and less risk and want to start a family right now or something, take RE and don’t look back. If you’re hoping for IB and willing to take the risk and have no obligations other than to yourself, consider IB and make a thoughtful decision.

thank you so much for the reply! My original plan was to head into RE at a later stage after gaining all the experience in IB.

For the bank wise, I would say it’s not the best atm but still has a decent name on the street. Just find it a waste to let everything go after chasing it for 3 years of my undergrad only for such an unprecedented event to happen :/

Given what you have said I believe that I’ll just take on the RE option for the stability at this present time. I’ll go with what the brain says this time.

thank you once again :)
