Take a break from IB and go work a random job in Banff
As the title suggests, I completed an IB internship at a MM firm in Canada. Unfortunately, I didn't receive a return offer due to a hiring freeze (none of the interns did). I anticipate obtaining the necessary documents to work in the United States in by end of next year, though I won't delve into the specifics for now. With this timeline in mind, I'm faced with a decision regarding my next career move.
One option is to search for a boutique IB job or a position in the finance industry in Canada while I wait for the documents to work in the U.S. I could continue building my experience in the field, which has been my primary focus throughout my four years in university. I also joined a fraternity partly for the networking opportunities it offered, and while I did have a lot of fun, recruitment and networking were always in the back of my mind. During my time at university, I concentrated on landing a summer IB internship. I made connections through my fraternity, and I enjoyed the experience, but the prospect of advancing my career was ever-present.
However, there's something else I want to consider: I want to go live in Banff National Park and work there for a bit. I'm aware that the opportunity to pursue this may not come around again. I want to do some random job in banff, work out daily, hike, and do other adventurous activities daily. Then I can direcrelty recruit for the states after taking that little break after graduation which I think can fit easiely into my story. I was born and brought up in a city and went to uni in a city, so I never had a chance to experience anything else.
Despite the challenging job market conditions I've consistently managed to secure what I wanted and I am not considering this because it is just tough right now. Whether I stick in IB or exit after a couple of years, I sense that the chance to work odd jobs at the Banff National Park might never come around again. What should I do?
Do you not think it'll be significantly harder to recruit when you have a 1 year employment gap?
It probably will, but its not like I worked for 5 years then took a 2 year gap. I havent started my career yet, I will graduate in December this year so I would not see it as a gap because I will still recruit for 1st year analyst roles. Does that make sense? What do you think?
