The Biggest Bank in the World

Just read an article that names BNP Paribas as the biggest bank in the world with $3.21 trillion in assets. First thing I ask is can anyone help confirm the validity of this, and the second is, how the fuck did they manage that? Dont they only really have street cred in France?

they're definitely biggest, by a decent margin if i remember correctly. big in all of continental europe, especially france, belgium, and italy. they also have a solid EM presence through their operations in eastern europe and the mediterranean.

Not sure what "street cred" has to do with banking assets. RBS is second, or at least was for a good part of 2010, and we all know how much street cred they have.

They have US operations though as well. I'm pretty sure my father's fund (SF based) has a line of credit from BNP.
