The Morgan Stanley Discount
As bonus numbers start coming in, I'm interested in hearing about MS all in comp.
Information on here about junior comp has been sparse. Even on previous threads dating back years, there's a big lack of information regarding bonus numbers and all in comp even though it's considered a "Top BB". From the figures, I've seen the numbers have been severely underwhelming in comparison to JPM/GS. Even last year other top BB figures were noticeably higher, but everything relating to MS was silent...
Is the MS discount real?
sadge...
Bump
Have it all wrong - there is no such thing as an MS discount. can only speak for IB, but they are def on the top side of all the BB's comps.
Lateraled from MS to JPM.
TMT (before split )
Culture was terrible and pay was average
T and MT haven't been grouped together in at least 10 years, are you in your 30s and your tag just happens to say intern? Kinda confused unless you're talking about JPM but even then I think T and MT have been separate for awhile
This aged poorly
These differing answers are part of the issue. One person says it’s on the high end of BBs and the next says it’s shit. Can’t imagine it’s that good if there’s so much spread in responses on every thread.

If you look at old UK compensation reports, MS pays pretty badly compared to every other US BB until ~VP1 where it starts to pay top of the range (with respect to mean total comp). Google arkesden compensation reports for more details.
I have heard internally that we (MS) smooth over bonuses traditionally. So you won't make a lot more (esp. relative to other US BBs) in good years but there is more downside protection in bad years. Not sure if that's true but guess I will find out next year.
Why not just make that part of base then? Fixed costs vs variable costs. Bonus is supposed to be variable
Last summer MS A1s received ~65k bonus, A2s ~90k
Meanwhile GS A1s received ~95-100k on average.
Bump
MS junior comp is dog. Median bonus was ~60k for A1 when the edge against Goldman’s prestige factor was historically above street comp to the Goldman discount. No addtl covid / retention bonuses were given. Base bump to street lagged most banks. Meals only expensable to office now. Expecting to get shafted this year
My MS bonus was 55k…..why the fuck did I join this bank? Turned it down for Moelis…
Def mid - bottom tier bonuses
Source: i work there
Looks like the MS discount is real.
Bonuses are coming out and seeing anywhere from 30-60k… Pay isn’t remotely comparable to JPM/GS.
Has jpm come out with numbers
GS please dont fuck me
