Theories about why some bankers use this forum
I was just curious to hear some theories from bankers about some of the other bankers that come to this forum. Many of the bankers who come to this site are clearly very nice and respectful people who genuinely want to help out those who want to learn more. But I noticed there are an inordinate amount of bankers (or at least I think they are bankers) who just seem to spend way too much time just waiting to interject their condescending comments and talk down to people who are just legitimately trying to learn more about banking. I am kind of curious to hear what thoughts people have on this forum. I am probably going to be flamed, but I think it will see be interesting regardless. I usually try to be a passive observer in the forum topics since they usually seem to devolve into back and forth bickering. But I just could not help myself, what does everyone think?
banking isn't necessarily a nice world, but every banker that i have come across has been respectful and helpful. but that doesn't mean they are altruistic...
just ingore the rude people. thats just the cost of having a free, open, unlimited discussion board.
hmmmm....honestly I think you're pretty stupid to be complaining. Alot of people here get free honest opinions and advice that could potentially help them obtain and succeed in some of the most competitive jobs out there.
perhaps you should be grateful for the little useful advice you do get and sthu?
As a former analyst (I can finally say that!) you're tired, cranky and sometimes feel like blowing steam. Some here choose to be condescending and others are very direct. Either way, you might gain something from their words, but don't take anything to the "T" on here.
The average banker has a pretty healthy ego. The ones that post here I think do so because it takes like 2 seconds out of an otherwise typical day getting your ass kicked that it feels good to help others and personally, I just like to shoot the breeze about nonsense. It helps take the edge off. Those folks that spend way too much time just waiting to interject their condescending comments and talk down to people are "Enablers" and will always scope out opportunities to flame others. It's a low self esteem thing. Best thing to do is ignore them if you can.
aadpepsi and opticalcharge I think that is probably the most accurate description of what goes on in the forums that I have ever heard. I think that actually makes a lot of sense. It is also pretty interesting that some people think that it is complaining if you are the kind of person who doesn't like people to speak condescendingly and disrespectfully to you. I guess some people have just accepted being pushed around as a way of life. but then again, these are probably the same people doing the flaming. but blowing steam and takig the edge off seem like pretty legit reasons. I was just curious about why some bankers post here and that actually makes sense. thanks guys.
I'm not a banker, but there is some good advice here...some misleading as well, but that sort of comes with getting something for free.
Keep in mind too... these are some pretty long f'n days and if you don't kick back with some banter to kill the time you'll go nuts I assure you. Consider also that there's a perception thing in an office and most bankers try to closely guard how they're perceived with colleagues, so banter online is a fabulous thing. Finally, my closest friends have already heard my best material, so I test market on the forum occasionally... :-)
ive found that most of the condescending comments come from non-bankers, esp those that are wannabe bankers still in college. the actual bankers themselves only choose to give nasty comments cause the questions that are asked have either been asked many times before or its a question that could be answered if you spent just 10min researching.
Some of us just can't get enough of banking. We spend 16 hours in our cubes only to return home and read/post about finance/banking related matters.
As for the condescending people here, it really is sad. There is a nice way to say things and a rude way, and some people always choose to deliver their messages rudely. The truth is, you really never know who the person behind the computer is. Many of the debates on these forums can lead to pretty great insight if people would learn that two very intelligent people can have very differing opinions.
Personally, I think we could use about half the bickering this forum has (hey, some is always fun). I'm pretty excited for the implementation of an authentication feature which will allow us to see who is speaking from experience and who is speculating. Both perceptions are valuable, but some people inappropriately mask which one they are sharing.
Any idea when the authentication stuff will be added? I think this will be immensely useful on the forum.
All forums have idiots on them. I don't think there's anyting special going on here.
I am pretty sure that the large majority of people on this forum are college kids (and some high school kids too, which is ridiculous).
If they are posting a lot, chances are they are either college kids, or bad analysts (there are exceptions of course). Those are probably the only two types of people who would waste their spare time and go out of their way to post something completely useless to a conversation.
