Thoughts on Lateraling
Have an offer from a top UMM bank (Jefferies/William Blair/RBC) with a good group. I can’t help but consider lateraling to a BB/EB after my first year. I think what irks me the most is that I feel like I’m missing out on something even though I know I’ll get a solid experience in terms of modeling and deal experience. My group has solid pe placement but little to no MF placement. Am I wrong to want that optionality? Or am I being silly and should just chill and finish out my 2 year stint? It’s just something that has been bothering me. I have solid stats and go to a target school as well, so I do have solid pedigree. Just got a bit unlucky during SA recruiting
So you have not even started yet and are thinking about lateraling? I mean, if you want to re-recruit for FT after your internship then by all means go for it. But to say that you want to lateral without even working there yet seems to be the wrong mindset in my opinion. I think if you are dead set on MF PE then yes, lateraling to a BB/EB for the optionality would be a reasonable thing to consider. But if I were you I would go into the internship with an open mind.
Agreed with the above. I ended up going to a boutique and have greatly enjoyed the experience, as I get to take greater responsibility for my work on deals. In many scenarios, a lower tier BB can be a much worse experience than a top tier MM or boutique.
Sorry just wanna clarify this is a FT offer as I interned there
Got it. Same advice applies - give it an actual chance for at least 6 months. If you want MF PE, then you can lateral after a year and recruit on-cycle (you would have to do a 3rd year). Plenty of non-MF off-cycle opportunities but it seems that prestige is important to you.
