Tips for Landing a boutique IB internship Freshman year?

Hello everyone. Incoming college freshman with hopes of breaking into IB. I've heard of search funds, remote PE, and other internships however one of the best internships to land (i've heard) is an unpaid boutique IB internship. I am currently looking at shops around my city that have less than 10 people. Does anyone have tips for landing these? What do they typically entail? What sort of technicals/interview prep do I have to do along with networking? Is it even possible? Thanks.

Landing a boutique IB internship as a freshman is challenging but absolutely possible with the right approach. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some actionable tips:

1. Networking is Key

  • Start by reaching out to local boutique firms in your area. Introduce yourself, explain your interest in their firm, and inquire if they might be open to having an intern for the summer, even if they don’t have a formal job posting.
  • Use informational coffee chats to build relationships. Proximity can be an advantage, so leverage it to meet professionals in person.
  • Tap into your college network—connect with upperclassmen who have interned at boutiques or other finance-related roles.

2. Cold Outreach Strategy

  • Cold-emailing is a common and effective method. Personalize your emails to highlight why you’re interested in their firm and how you can add value.
  • Keep your emails concise and professional. Attach a polished resume (use templates like the WSO Investment Banking Resume Template).

3. Emphasize Your Eagerness to Learn

  • As a freshman, firms don’t expect you to have extensive technical knowledge. Instead, focus on demonstrating a strong work ethic, eagerness to learn, and a positive attitude.
  • Highlight any relevant coursework, extracurriculars, or personal projects that show your interest in finance.

4. Prepare for Basic Technicals

  • While technical questions may not be as rigorous as those for junior or senior internships, having a basic understanding of accounting and finance concepts can set you apart.
  • Learn basic accounting, valuation methods, and financial modeling. WSO guides and Vault guides are excellent resources to get started.

5. Cast a Wide Net

  • Don’t limit yourself to just one or two firms. Reach out to as many boutiques as possible in your area. The goal is to secure any relevant experience, even if it’s unpaid.
  • Consider other finance-related roles like search funds, remote private equity internships, or corporate finance if boutique IB opportunities are limited.

6. Be Open to Unpaid Roles

  • Many boutique internships, especially for freshmen, are unpaid. While this may require financial sacrifices, the experience can be invaluable for future recruiting.

7. What to Expect

  • Tasks at a boutique IB internship may include financial analysis, creating pitch decks, market research, and assisting with deal execution.
  • Hours can be long, but the exposure to various aspects of deals and the close-knit environment can provide a steep learning curve.

8. Leverage the Experience

  • Use the internship as a stepping stone for sophomore and junior summer roles. The experience will make you more competitive for larger firms (BB, EB, MM) in the future.

By following these steps, you can maximize your chances of landing a boutique IB internship and set yourself up for success in investment banking. Good luck!
