Title: Breaking Into Banking with a Non-Traditional Background - Any Advice?

Hey everyone,

I’m looking to transition into banking, and I could really use some advice from people who've made similar jumps. My background is a bit different, and I’m wondering how to position myself for success in this industry.

I’ve recently applied for a bilingual BBA program at TELUQ (hoping to transfer some credits), but before that, my work experience was in pretty non-finance fields. I’ve spent time working in alcohol and tobacco regulation back in Norway, plus private security in Québec. For the past three years, I’ve also worked as a print traffic technician for various film festivals, so a lot of coordination, deadline-driven work, and handling logistics, but not exactly finance or banking-related.

I know there are a lot of routes to break into banking, but I’m struggling to figure out how to make the most of what I’ve done so far. How can I leverage my skills in a way that would make me stand out to potential employers? And, in particular, how does one break into banking in Québec where bilingualism is key?

I’ve heard it’s all about networking, but how do I even start if I don’t have the traditional background many people here seem to have? Is there any hope for someone like me, or should I focus on a more traditional financial path?

Appreciate any insights, and I’ll gladly take all the advice I can get.

This recap captures a non-traditional, self-reflective tone while seeking advice in a constructive manner, similar to how users on WrongPlanet.org may communicate their struggles and ask for guidance.
