To what extent will groups know how you ranked them during group placement?

Don't want to get caught in a lie but also want to maximize my chances of a good group... would it be easy to tell if I ranked a group a couple places down from what they expect, say 4th or 5th instead of 2nd/3rd? Or is being anything but completely honest just a bad idea all-around?

Furthermore, is it commonplace for analysts to ask me what my final ranking was once I've submitted to HR but before I've been placed?
