EBs: GHL Chicago is probably their best office, and pwp crushes it in chicago too. Evr has a small paper/packaging office but ive heard its also top notch. Laz rx is in chi and a top shop for that, and they also run a solid business services/education software i think out of chicago
BBs: GS and JPM are probably top in chicago. JP has their industrials group in chi that is very strong and i think an m&a team if anyone has insight on that. Im sure GS is great too
LAZ RX team in CHI used to be very good but they lost some MDs in the last couple of years. Still a great team, probably better than their NY RX team.
GHL is another noteworthy EB in CHI. They're headed by ex-Lehman folks and are doing extremely well. They take very few analysts (usually from Northwestern or UChi) but their buyside placement is top-notch (UMM/MF).
Comment above had EBs mainly right. Will also add Moelis, although I think they focus on paper/packaging. Guggenheim has their PE advisory group which is MM-focused but I heard is extremely strong. Has a bunch of ex-Blair tech bankers.
BB
GS: Industrials, CMG (generalist and EdTech focused)
JPM: Industrials and M&A group
Citi: I think industrials(could be wrong on this), metals and mining
BofA: Industrials
Barclays: FIG, Tech, one other I think I'm missing
UBS: Business Services group that is just getting started with MD who moved over from Barclays
Would say that GS or JPM are the best ones in Chicago, although that is my opinion.
Laz CHI Analyst exits are insane mainly bc of Rx presence — multiple Sixth Street, KKR, Apollo, etc
For BBs it would be GS, JPM, and BofA. They focus mostly on industrials. MS doesn't really have a meaningful presence in CHI.
For EBs, GHL (M&A focus) and LAZ (RX focus) are clearly the top. Other EBs have very limited or niche presence in CHI (eg EVR works mostly across the paper/packaging sector).
