Toughest Groups Historically
Hey all,
There is a lot of talk on the forums of groups with the best work life balance for IB/PE. What are the toughest groups in IB/PE? This should be a combination of exclusivity/sweatshop persona, but also a mix of historical and present day performance. Going to rely on the older guys on the forum for pre-2010 specifics towards groups/firms. Some to consider:
1980’s: Salomon Brothers, KKR, DLJ
1990’s: GS, Carlyle Group, Bain Capital, Blackstone
2000’s: MS M&A, JPM, KKR, TPG, Blackstone
2010’s: Moelis NYC, Jefferies NYC/Houston, Lazard, HL, GS TMT & FIG, MS M&A, Audax NYC
2020’s: PJT with the early lead...
Cheers,
Will

Drexel
It's so weird seeing how many successful modern day managers came out of Drexel. No idea how you hire that effectively that quickly. Really impressive.
You pay 3-10x going market rate lol. Simple enough
Drexel Burnham in the 80s (especially Beverly Hills office where Milken sat) was absolutely insane

I encourage it! What goes up...
Baird’s Industrials in Chicago
What time frame 2010's?

Thinking more historical/exclusive as well - Jefferies Houston has been noted
Citi FIG
lmaooooo
Is it that bad
Barclays Industrials, MS FIG,
Lehman brothers FICC
BMO mining
Surprised Moelis LA isn't on this list..
Had a buddy in this group - his wife in her marriage speech specifically referenced their relationship surviving his analyst years here
haha thats awesome
Well guess the rumors are true then hahaha
This comment, which can only be born out of experience, is surprisingly refreshing compared to what you typically read here. Thanks.
Jefferies M&A, 2017-2018. Heard some insane stories where several juniors left (PE and some quit), and instead of hiring more juniors, added senior guys...
UBS healthcare used to be a gulag. My friend knew someone who legit just quit in the middle of the night at like 3am.
worked with some people who did analyst years there 10+ years ago, crazy horror stories
Give us one!
Isn't that now just Jefferies NYC?
2000’s UBS LA is the major one missing. Has to be one of the toughest groups of all-time.
[insert group in LA in the 1980s/90s] all absolutely sweatshops
probably the 442nd infantry in German-held Europe or the 1st Marines at Guadalcanal
oh you meant something else
Ironically, my great grandfather fought at Guadalcanal
God bless him, that must have been a hell of a time
