Transferring Offices after being a SA

I talked to this one guy who interned at a BB for his SA internship and then asked to be transferred to their office in another city for his FT stint and was able to do so. I was wondering how common this is and how it is determined.

This is fairly common. I have seen it myself with a number of people. I didn't think it happens as much as it actually does though. For example, multiple buddies of mine worked in the southeast office and are now in the southwest. Midwest to northeast. Northeast to South. Northeast to Midwest. Pacific to Northeast. Midwest to Pacific. If the company has locations in all the major financial hubs then you'll probably see a lot of people get placed all over the country after their summer stint. Most interns seem to stay with their original team though. Some companies have a pool process where you can put yourself into the pool after the summer and try to get matched with a different team. This has worked great for some people, I know quite a few where they had an awesome placement after a so so summer team. Hope that helps.

I’d be careful about trying to switch and you’ll need to feel out whether your group / bank is receptive to that. An intern in my group didn’t get an offer because senior bankers found out he was interested in coming back to a different group. And, my friend at another bank said if word got out that people wanted to switch from their office (city like Charlotte / Atlanta / Dallas) to the NYC office, they didn’t get a return offer.
