Transferring out of Ivey and help with my situation.

I will be attending the University of Western Ontario (Ivey AEO) this coming fall. I understand that Ivey is somewhat of a target. I am a dual citizen of Canada and the U.S but would preferably like to work in the later.

Would it be more advantageous for IB opportunities to try to transfer out of Western to a target in the U.S after freshman year? Would the opportunities transferring to a different school be that significant?

Thanks for your help in advance.

You wouldn't be transferring from Ivey. I mean, you even recognized that Ivey doesn't start until third year. As of right now you are just a Western University student in whatever program you have selected.

To answer your question about staying vs. transferring, you need to ask yourself the following: Do you want to work in Canada, or the U.S.? If the answer is Canada, stay at Western and make sure you get into Ivey. If the answer is the U.S., then transfer to a U.S. target.

Remember that if you aren't able to transfer, but want to work in the U.S., I wouldn't worry about it too much. If you make it into Ivey, you have a very good shot at receiving an IBD offer in the U.S. (but obviously less of a chance than if you went to a U.S. target).

As for freshman internships, it's quite hard because you're just a Western student with no Ivey name on your resume. But it IS possible. Join clubs (WIC, PBSN), network with upper years, and most importantly network with firms you're interested in. It's all in your hands.

Thanks for your response! Yes, that is a very valid point that I will be transferring from Western and not Ivy. I assume transferring from Western is very difficult but not impossible. I personally would like to work in the U.S. as many connections of mine are in the U.S and I like living in the U.S significantly more.

I have another question regarding freshman internships if you don't mind answering. I have read it is almost impossible to get an internship from a bb firm for freshman year. Would getting an internship from a firm you do not necessarily want to go to in the future still be beneficial? Don't want to be shallow, but would I look good for your resume? I have a good family connection with a BB&T firm down south but ultimately would not want to work there full time. However, I would assume it is great experience.

Thanks again for your help! I understand the most important things are to work hard and network.
