travel in the sumer

A lot of my wealthy buddies are going on really expensive trips after graduating in May. I have 2 months between school and work (BB IBD analyst), but since I already went through 1.5K in Cancun for spring break, I just can't bring myself to do a Euro trip for another 3-4K given that travel alone would pretty much cover my sign on bonus (10k before tax).

My family is middle middle class (70K combined income in a low-cost region), and I feel like spending so much money on travel would be a douchy move.

Any other 2010 analysts in a similar situation? I am deciding now if I am to join my buddies in their trips, so any advice would be appreciated.

Are you worried that your parents are going to give you some grief?

You're probably right. If you're from a low-cost region, and your parents make $70k total, you're closer to lower middle class. How many people that your parents know have kids going into IBD at a bulge-bracket bank in a major city? None? They're not going to understand your lifestyle.

I think my parents don't understand mine, and they make almost 4 times what your parents make. They don't like spending loads of money on anything. If your parents are like mine, they're not going to understand dropping 3-4K USD on a Euro-trip. Fuck 'em. Do what you want.

If you think you're going to have a good time, go. If you think that you're going to worry about money the whole time, don't ruin it for everyone else. Seriously, though, don't feel pressured one way or the other based on someone else's opinion on the matter.

Provided your paying with your own money....why not. Have fun. Your 22 and make more than both your parents, by 24 you will be making double. They should be proud, its the American Dream that the parents work hard and the children do better than them. My grandfather was a high school drop out who became a train conductor, my father went to community college (better graduate school, but still), I went to a nationally know university. Its the way America works, where hard work rewards hard work over time (f*cking liberals should learn that).

"Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, for knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. And greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA."

stay at hostels and eat at local places...spent $900 over three weeks in riviera maya (outside cancun) and still had a great time. $10-$12 a bed at some hostels and 5-8 peso tacos saved me a lot of dough

You're going to work your balls off over the next 2-3 years and make plenty of money. Enjoy the free time while you can!

You should go-- JJC is right in that Vegas is a good choice if you are trying to not spend a lot of money... if you really rough it, you can get a hotel room for what MDs tip their water boy at Le Cirque.

If you are feeling baller, the venetian or bellagio are your best bets-- they are damn beautiful, and have great casinos, pools, shopping etc.

However, the beauty of Vegas is that it doesn't matter where you stay, as you can just walk down the boulevard to get to the other hotels and eat/gamble/whatever in the nicer hotels. Since you are going to be spending little time in your room, you may want to stay at something like the MGM or Paris, where they give away rooms like slightly irregular candy.

I agree in general that it doesn't matter too much where you stay in Vegas. But being on the strip is key since that's where you will spend the vast majority of your time. This is why I generally stay away from Hard Rock, Palms, and the Rio, even though they are all nice hotels.

Also, the nicer hotels have better pools, which are pretty useful during the summertime. Even if he stays at the encore or bellagio he still won't spend as much as a nice european trip.

your a much bigger idiot spending 1.5K on a crummy, idiotic week in Cancun, than you would be spending 6K in Ibiza (in Spain), or other insane places like that (in Europe) that make Cancun look like a gypsy circus in the Romanian countryside...

go travel

I studied abroad in Europe and traveled extensively while I was there and found ways to do so cheaply. Check out the Europe on a Shoestring books or travel tips, or whatever they are, for ways to save money. There are cheap hostels in every city I imagine you'd be going to, and there are plenty of other ways to save money (like grabbing PB&J from a local grocery store instead of eating out every meal). Unless you're spending lavishly the entire time, it shouldn't cost you anywhere near 3-4k. Your biggest expense will be your airfare over there, but there are ways to find cheap flights if you get creative (for example, taking a cheap domestic flight to another city which has cheaper international flights). Another thing I'd recommend is to pick up a Eurail pass while you're stateside if you're planning on taking trains from country to country while you're over there. On another note, see if some of your friends would rather hit up South America. I'm planning on taking a trip down there after school to meet up with some friends living there and know that it will be incredibly cheap compared to a Euro trip.
