Try to smooth things over with Difficult MD

Background: I work at a small-mid boutique where we have 3-5 MDs in our group. There is one MD is who is especially painful to work for and I have been staffed on a handful of his things. I have been working hard for him, but feel like I cannot meet his expectations. Given we are small, I can't really control my staffings to avoid working with him. To add to this, I feel as if he is starting to write me off, which is compounding as I am not being looped into client calls, and basically slowly feel my role  being reduced/reverted to an analyst (Do these comments, don't think, etc.).

I am trying to decide if I should try and invest the energy to not be fully written off by this MD or If I just get through working with him and let happen what happens. Quitting is probably not an option at this point as I want to see out a full associate stint at this firm if possible. Any advice would be helpful.

Depending on how lame this MD is he might get you fired. Better to lateral
