Two unpaid part time remote intern in Summer?
Rising college sophomore, still unknown about my future other than “I know I want to do finance”. I wanted to experience both sell-side and buy-side finance and got two unpaid remote internship offers.
Offer 1: Newly established search fund and I’m the only intern there. The main role was conducting industry research, outreach, and some kind of business evaluation. MD was from wall street with super target college + super target MBA background and I’m the first intern there. I even think it might be possible to have some connection in the investment banks from him. 2-3hr a day. Might be more suitable for buy-side roles? And I think helping a new firm to navigate its path will be something unique to say about.
I committed to this job as the only intern and I don’t think it’ll be easier to quit than the second job
Offer 2: M&A advisory intern. Will collaborate with other interns in a group which means possibly less work and more teamworking. Will do something more solid but the entire team will collaborate (deal sourcing, evaluation, due diligence support, client presentation prep). Would expect similar or less working hours. MD is a really fun person.
I think multi-tasking will be certainly be doable is it good for me to do both (leaning for both as first one is hard to quit/might not be that intensive/MD might bring connection, second one brings more solid M&A experience and able to collaborate with other people).
In this case, should I inform both MD about the two internships or is it better for me not to tell? The industry they are targeting are not the same so no competition will exist, and I’ll keep all business decisions confidential regardless. How will future HR from BB/EB/PE view myself having 2 overlapping in the same summer btw
I did pretty much exactly that last summer, and it helped and raised some questions at the same time. I would recommend it if at a non target.
Sorry but do you mind elaborating the benefits and the questions?
Sure, the benefit was that I had another internship of experience to speak to. Especially if your internships are in different industries or have you covering different sectors, you'll have more things to speak about and it'll be easier to craft your story towards different types of roles and opportunities.
The questions were basically that the internships didn't seem that legit or serious. If I am able to do 2 internships at the same time, then how is it possible that I'm learning a lot and getting serious tasks from both of them? Frankly, I didn't get a lot to do in either internship as they were both unstructured, remote, unpaid, and just unserious. Still, I had to talk up those experiences so make sure you have enough things to talk about.
So you just explained the two interns at the same time and ppl who interview you won’t see this as not legit right?
