University of Maryland--IB

hey I just had a general question about the University of Maryland...I will be attending it in the fall and am majoring in Economics, but does the University of Maryland get recruited at all and does it have some respect in the IB field? Thank you very much!

The aerospace & defense coverage groups of most firms are based in DC, so Maryland's proximity to them works in its favor. I know Jefferies' aerospace & defense group has several UMD alumni. Stifel takes some UMD kids every year. Not sure about FBR, though.

Oh, and UBS IBD will be doing on-campus recruiting next fall. It will be the first time that any IB will be coming on campus at UMD. You should really try and get into the b-school, though. Not sure how keen IB's are on econ majors at schools where finance degrees are offered.

James07JEF's A&D is mostly full of UVA guys...
Is anybody stating anything to the contrary? I simply said that JEF A&D had several UMD alums, not that it was FULL of UMD alums...

Stifel, Robert Baird, Jefferies, and a few other MM's all recruit at UMD, but all of their recruitment is specifically through the Smith School of Business for Finance majors. Get into Smith and you'll be in a better position to get these opportunities

It's good that you know early on that you want to go into IB. Though it isn't well represented on the street by any means, UMD does have people at each of the bulge brackets, so you should definitely connect with these alums early on. UMD students as a whole are lazy, so they don't aggressively network as much as they should. No BB's formally recruit at UMD, so you need to reach out to alums to get in there.

There are several co-curricular programs that you can use to distinguish yourself and open yourselves up to opportunities, such as the Lemma Senbet Fund (student-managed investment fund similar to the Nitany Fund at Penn State), Emerging CFOs program, etc.

Despite the obstacles, people from UMD do make it onto the street. '09 sent 2 to MS, 2 to Citi, 2 to Barcap, and 2 to BAML. This year is sending a few to BarCap and at least 4 to UBS.

Yeah I'm in smith, those palcement numbers sound about right, except that was class of 10 you're talking about. Also, you forgot 1 or 2 bnp, couple of suntrust, etc. Also got into HBS 2+2.

Depending on work experience, I would suggest trying to land something lower-key before shooting for S&T. I have multiple friends at UMD who have landed jobs at BB's, but none of them have gotten an internship for S&T or IB without doing something else with the bank first, such as PWM, and a number of those first jobs were in the DC offices of banks (which for most BB's don't do any S&T or IB, though there are some aerospace/defense groups in Northern Virginia).

There are a handful of people (no more than 10) that get onto Wall Street each year. UMD's OCR is definitely growing and is getting much better. On Campus Recruiting includes Stifel, BB&T, Needham, and maybe one or two more MM banks. There are a decent amount of UMD alum at top banks. Citi, Baird, GS, Bernstein and several other firms recruit for positions with a resume drop. Finance Fellows people generally get some unique opportunities because the people running it have closer connections to Wall Street. i.e. finance fellows get access to select accelerated JP Morgan IBD, PB, S&T, etc. With that said, UMD has a very strong presence for Commercial Banking, MO, BO (FLDP programs Banks + Nonbanks) and a massive presence for Big 4 (ranging from audit to Deloitte S&O)

In all honesty, unless your school is complete garbage, UMD isn't much of an upgrade. It's an alright school, but you will have to network your ass off.

As for Emory vs UMD, I don't know Emory's recruiting situation, but judging by the competitiveness to get into Emory, it should be better than UMD's OCR.

How much does location would matter? I mean I would be targeting NYC only (and I would be an exchange student only for one academic year), and given that I would need to do an awful lot of networking, should I choose Emory over UMD, given that Emory is only slighty better?
