University of Rochester IB Chances

Hey WSO, I'm looking for some advice.

First off, a little background on me. I'm currently a rising sophomore pursuing a degree in economics. My goal is to begin my career working in IB in a major city (NYC, CHI, ect). While Rochester has a solid academic reputation (34 US News) and I like the school, I fear that it will be an uphill battle achieving my goal of working in IB due to the fact that we are considered a non target with little OCR and don't have tons of alumni working in the industry.

Due to this fact, I've contemplated trying to transfer to a target school (think northwestern, Cornell, Gtown, UVA) for either my sophomore spring or junior fall in order to bolster my chances at IB. Do you think this would be worth the hassle of having to start all over again at a new school in order to increase my odds for IB? Is transferring after sophomore year too late considering that much of the recruiting for junior summer internships goes on in sophomore spring? If I network properly, do I have a good shot at landing a solid IB gig staying at Rochester with my credentials? These are just some of the questions that I think about and would appreciate whatever advice you guys can offer.

Thank you!

You definitely will have a good chance. Network, network, network. I can't say it enough. I come from a non-target and networking is the only sound reason I can think of that explains the position I am currently in. My advice would be keep up the good grades, run for leadership positions both in your investment group and fraternity, and pursue solid sophomore to junior year summer internships. You can slowly add more depth to your resume by completing preparatory programs that show your interest in IB. Some things I did which always gets asked about in interviews is the Wall Street Prep Modeling course (~$199) and the Bloomberg Market Concepts certification (~$125?). I think leadership positions in your investment group will carry a good amount of weight as well. I was thinking about transferring, even got accepted into an ivy, but I figured I would have missed the OCR wave and I was right, so I'm glad I stayed. I'd be willing to share more detailed experiences if you pm me.
