Vanderbilt MBA

Graduated from H/Y/P with a 2.7 gpa and did my analyst years in HC IB at a well respected boutique. Recently made the move to a LMM PE shop focused on HC. I am very interested in getting an MBA from Vanderbilt but I am worried about my undergrad gpa ruining my chances of getting accepted. How large of a factor is gpa in MBA admissions? What are my odds of getting into Vandy?

just look at their class profile and figure out what score you need to get on the GMAT to balance out your lower-than-average gpa. If your GPA is 20% below class average then try to get 20% above their average GMAT score. GMAT club is a great website for mba admissions questions.

I think you’re overthinking this a little bit man. MBAs evaluate you holistically. Your work experience is great, and if your GMAT is also great They won’t really pay attention to your GPA as much. You also graduated from a prestigious undergrad, which does help a lot. People don’t say it does, but it does matter. It shows that you’re a smart person, just off of the fact that you got into one of those schools. I would shoot higher than the mbas you’ve listed you could get into an M7 or a T 15 if you really do well on your applications and get stellar recommendations.

Thank you for the reassurance, I truly appreciate it. What do you think separates a great application from an average one?

Stellar recommendations. An average one would just be your boss. A seller one would be would be a client reference or the client CEO rooting for you.

Impact. In your case, an average one would be that you executed deals for your team. A stellar one would be that you originated these deals yourself by identifying a strategic consolidated investment for your firm, and did all the analysis to make this come into fruition.

You need to show that you can make impact. Impact isn't measured by the brand of the company but what you have done. The reason why people harp on those without front office client facing roles is because its harder to show impact. In your case, show impact and crush it at your job. Your priority right now should be forgetting about your GPA and doing everything you can to absolutely crush it at work.
