Vista Equity PE Analyst or BB IB Analyst
Thinking about career opportunities, trajectory, etc...
Would you rather take a vista Equity PE analyst offer or a 2 year analyst program at a top BB?

Depends. If you want PE, then do PE
Why turn down a top PE offer if you want to do PE long-term? Theres no guarantees you’ll get an equal or better offer after doing IB
Similarly...why turn down a BB IB offer for PE if you wanna do IB long term ?
Caveat being: If you want to do *Tech PE ** *, do Vista. Else, IB.
I see the rationale behind being scared of breaking from the traditional banking —> PE path, but sometimes it’s good to go off the path a little bit. I think PE analyst programs are great opportunities
Do you want to live in Austin or NYC? Big consideration too.
Good point. Let’s say slight preference for NY. Ultimate goal is PE, but appreciate the skill set/experience gained in banking. Not sure of a specific industry yet. Software doesn’t seem like a bad place to start though.
With that said, would if it be dumb to take a BAML/Barclays/Citi FT IB offer over a Vista PE analyst offer
.
I work at a bank of similar stature to the ones you mentioned and decided not to pursue Vista due to them only hiring in Austin / Chicago. I would not want to give up 2+ years in NYC to move to a city I know nobody in, no matter how good the job is.
I don't know a ton about Vista's program, but I would likely go with that. There are hundreds of super smart kids coming out of 2 years at a BB that are trying to get into PE. If you already have PE experience at this point, you are far ahead of the curve, as there are far fewer people working at a reputable PE firm right out of school. Look into things like where people end up from being an analyst at Vista, but my guess is that they all lateral into other strong PE firms or get MBAs.
I was interested in Vista's analyst program, but I heard from a friend that your primary role as an analyst is sourcing and as a result you don't learn nearly as much modeling as you would as an investment banking analyst. I was wondering if anyone could comment on analyst responsibility at Vista?
