Volunteer to be laid off

Hey everyone. Hopefully someone can chime in and be a sounding board for me!

I'm currently a 3rd year analyst at a boutique bank. I have an offer to join a great HF firm in the next few months. I'm planning on leaving my bank within the next couple of weeks to take a little bit of time off in between jobs.

Now, our bank is going through layoffs very soon. My question is, would it be unwise for me to volunteer to be laid off? Others in my group have done it in the past in between jobs. I'd get a nice severance package... Would there be any real downside here? Could any of this come back to haunt me in the future? I have a great relationship with everyone in the group. Please give me your thoughts. Thanks!

I think it might constitute quitting and you might not be entitled to a garden leave but you literally have nothing to lose.

I assume you have savings for three months so I'd say go for it. If entire groups are getting laid off, now thats a different story.
