VPs not knowing what they’re doing

Currently in the office and sponsors group emailed my vp that we need to do a slide for them. Both him and I have no idea who the client is or what the ask is but he emails me let’s start working on this given the timeline and does not respond when I say I need to discuss. So I decided to do other work until he gives clear instructions. Anyone in similar situation?

You need to follow up with the VP. Maybe give them a quick call to discuss. Or try to find the sponsors group analyst and get some more info on the ask.

Its bot fair but shit rolls downhill. You're the one who' your VP is going to blame even if their instructions were unclear and you flagged.

This is a situation where you can either be right or be content. Don't let the principle of the unfairness get in the way.

Totally agree.

OP, you are putting yourself in a dangerous position likely to get yourself in trouble..."I emailed the VP and didn't hear back" is not an excuse and would make me, and every other superior I've worked with, hit the roof. If you don't know something, pick up the phone and call your VP. If he doesn't know or isn't answering, call the VP on the sponsors deal team. If he doesn't pick up, call the associate on the sponsors deal team and so on...

A lot of idiotic posts in this thread. it seems this forum is mostly populated by high school / college students who don't actually understand the basic dynamics of this job.

Here is a hint - the fact that this VP has given you very little guidance (he doesn't care about this request) should give you a very clear indication that this is low-priority, unimportant work for your team and the output doesn't really ultimately matter. This guy isn't inclined to waste his time walking through some basic slide creation for what sounds like a pitch or something for an entirely different team which he has no ownership over. This is a common thing in banking when you work for a coverage team - you will often receive requests for industry slides from product groups who are working in your vertical...senior people (VPs) have good reason not to care about something like this since they have little to no incentive to put effort into another team's workstream.

I don't mean to sound like a douche here and I understand it's tough being an analyst and there are a lot of aspects of this job that suck. The weak attitude you're conveying and inability to get things done without being spoon-fed instructions is not going to get you very far, whether it's in banking or any other profession that requires some level of initiative or independent thought. Just put some effort into using your brain creating the slide, then send it over to your VP to review. Since he doesn't care, he will sign off on it, then you're done with the work. There is nothing people hate more, especially in a job like this, than someone who puts in zero effort and can't do things on their own.

Don't be a helpless loser who needs his hand held - you are an adult now
