To make the most of your Summer Analyst (SA) experience in NYC, here are some key tips based on the most helpful WSO content:

In the Office:

  1. Be Proactive and Helpful:

    • No task is beneath you. Whether it's removing staples or preparing materials, approach every task with enthusiasm and precision.
    • Leave a traceable trail for your work. For example, if you're asked for 10 data points, ensure your file includes all 10 with links or sources. This makes life easier for full-time team members and shows your attention to detail.
  2. Build Relationships:

    • Get to know your fellow interns—they’re going through the same experience and can be a great support system.
    • Show genuine interest in learning from analysts and associates. If someone is explaining something, ask thoughtful questions, even if the topic seems minor.
  3. Time Management:

    • Prioritize getting in early over staying late. Being early signals commitment and allows you to start the day strong.
    • Be smart about your energy—long commutes can drain productivity, so living close to the office (as you are) is a great move.
  4. Learn the Basics:

    • Familiarize yourself with office tools like printers, setting up calls, and sending invites. These small things can save time and make you more efficient.
    • If you finish your tasks early, ask for more work or offer to help others. This shows initiative and keeps you engaged.
  5. Network Strategically:

    • While high performance on your assigned desk is critical, it’s okay to network with people on other desks to explore where you might fit best. Just ensure it doesn’t detract from your current responsibilities.

Out of the Office:

  1. Explore NYC:

    • Kips Bay/Murray Hill is a great location. Take advantage of nearby restaurants, bars, and parks.
    • Use weekends to explore iconic NYC spots like Central Park, the High Line, or museums. Just make sure you’re back at your desk on time Monday morning.
  2. Stay Healthy:

    • The long hours can be tough, so prioritize your physical and mental health. Find a gym nearby or go for runs along the East River.
    • Meal prep or find healthy food options around your office to avoid relying on takeout.
  3. Build a Support Network:

    • Leverage mentors, buddies, or senior team members who can guide you. They can provide insights into the firm’s culture and hiring decisions.
    • Friendly conversations about shared interests (sports, travel, etc.) can leave a lasting positive impression.
  4. Plan for Convenience:

    • Map out eateries and coffee spots near your office. Building rapport with staff at these places can save time and make your day smoother.
    • Prepare your wardrobe and essentials before the internship starts to avoid last-minute stress.
  5. Have Fun but Stay Professional:

    • NYC has a lot to offer socially, but always balance fun with professionalism. Enjoy the city, but ensure it doesn’t impact your performance or punctuality.

By combining strong performance in the office with thoughtful networking and enjoying NYC’s vibrant culture, you’ll maximize your SA experience and set yourself up for success. Good luck!
