WFH from abroad

Does anyone have any ideas if banks can (and actually do) check for your location while WFH? For example, if someone is employed in UK but is working in France atm can they fire you for that?

Cause HR keeps saying that people must stay in the UK but I know several people that have left UK to WFH from other European countries.

They definitely can track where you are. But I’m not sure if they actually do.

A friend at my cons firm told me that a coworker got an email from HR when he was working in a different country. Pretty much he either needed to return to home country, or take PTO during his stay. Not sure if banks are the same way, but definitely check with your boss or someone in HR first, to be on the safe side.

An what if you use a router with a VPN and then a remote desktop application on your computer to connect to your office desktop? I don't think they could track that since the IP would be UK right?

Idk, it is because I know people are doing that in every bank without asking it. The bosses are actually ok with that, just not HR. The ones that actually ask are denied to do that.

It’s a “do at your own risk”, the consequences are most likely getting fired (especially if actively using vpn to try and bypass the security measures).

Each bank has their own policy, but at least in the US, the policies are around tax issues which can impact the individual and under certain circumstances the firm. So they aren’t just being a pain, they usually have tax and legal consequences to look out for.

While the probability isn’t high you get caught, the consequences will most likely be very harsh.

Unfortunately, our HR said only UK but I know of people in the bank working all over Europe. So it seems just formal stuff, not actually implemented
