What am I doing wrong? Multiple all-nighters
Started as an Analyst a month ago. This is my first job out of college, but I’ve done multiple internships in IB/PE (European student). I did solid internships and secured 3 return offers, but Im really struggling now. Going home at 3-4am every night (and at least 1 all-nighter a week) despite being staffed on 1 project (its a live deal and we’re currently in an intense CIM drafting phase with 1 week to launch). Obviously this should be normal (right?), but I feel like being an Analyst is so much harder with the biggest difference being that I receive very little guidance vs before (feels like the team is expecting me to do everything myself) + the amount of responsibilities.
This is mentally challenging and I’m wondering if I basically suck at the job.
Is this normal? What am I doing wrong? When do 1y Analysts actually become ”good”?
Are you working on an accelerated process? Are others pulling all-nighters? In my experience, CIM drafting shouldn’t warrant all-nighters when managed properly.
No, thats the issue. Just me
Part of it will be simply the shock to the system of coming from having a protected intern title where you’re not supposed to do much to being a full time employee. It’ll take some time to get used to.
hard to comment on the specifics of your situation without more info (ie which parts take long, do you have to redo things often, so slides take you very long to start with, are you misinterpreting things, etc.).
This is an issue you should raise to your associate or senior analyst. I'm not sure if you've had much training or onboarding to begin with, but it sounds like you are overcomplicating things or putting too much work into the wrong stuff. I would frame the issue as "I want to get more efficient, and am wondering if I'm putting too much time into x, y, z, and not enough into other areas. How should I manage and do you have any best practices of how you go about this?". Your senior analysts and associates will be happy to help, as it will alleviate their workload in a future project if staffed with you.
Very good advice.
I do think it needs to be read in conjunction with remarks from others that in Europe, and especially continental Europe, interns are very much handheld for 1-2yrs of internships. Analysts need to be pragmatic and autonomous. Counterparts in other parts of the world would be senior analysts with the same amount of experience and would be drafting a fair part of the CIM themselves.
