What are internal cofee chats for anyway?

Starting an off-cycle at a MM boutique, and was told by the alumni that referred me to the job to organize "coffee chats" with people in my team to maximize my chance for a full-time offer.

I'm from a very small town in Germany, and I've never done this stuff before. I feel weird asking Associates to take time out of their schedule to ramble about meaningless stuff.
What do you usually talk about during coffee chats with your team? How would I structure one? Is it weird asking what the person likes to do outside of work?

I hope not too stupid of a question, any help would be appreciated. danke!!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's how you can approach internal coffee chats to maximize your chances for a full-time offer:

Purpose of Internal Coffee Chats

  • Networking: Build relationships with your team members.
  • Understanding the Team: Gain insights into the team dynamics and the work culture.
  • Show Interest: Demonstrate your enthusiasm and commitment to the role and the company.
  • Mentorship: Seek advice and guidance from more experienced colleagues.

Structuring a Coffee Chat

  1. Introduction:

    • Briefly introduce yourself and your background.
    • Mention the alumni who referred you, if relevant.
  2. Work-Related Questions:

    • Ask about their role and responsibilities.
    • Inquire about their career path and how they got to their current position.
    • Seek advice on how to succeed in your role and what skills are most valuable.
  3. Personal Interests:

    • Transition to more casual topics to build a personal connection.
    • Ask about their hobbies or interests outside of work. For example, "Do you have any free time and what do you like to do with it?"
    • Share any common interests if you have them, but be genuine.
  4. Company Insights:

    • Ask about the company culture and what makes it unique.
    • Inquire about any upcoming projects or initiatives that you could get involved in.
  5. Closing:

    • Thank them for their time and insights.
    • Express your enthusiasm for the role and the team.
    • Ask if they have any advice for someone in your position.

Tips for a Successful Coffee Chat

  • Be Genuine: Show genuine interest in their experiences and advice.
  • Active Listening: Pay attention and engage in the conversation.
  • Follow Up: Send a thank-you email after the chat, reiterating your appreciation and any key takeaways.

Example Questions

  • "Can you tell me more about your role and what a typical day looks like for you?"
  • "What do you think are the most important skills for someone in my position to develop?"
  • "How did you get started in this industry, and what has your career path been like?"
  • "What do you enjoy doing outside of work?"

Conclusion

Internal coffee chats are a valuable opportunity to build relationships, gain insights, and demonstrate your commitment to the team. By structuring your chats thoughtfully and showing genuine interest, you can make a positive impression and increase your chances of securing a full-time offer.

Viel Glück!

To get to know your team? The more people who know and like you, the better when it comes time for determining offers. A common intern mistake is just to sit at the desk and quietly wait for work... then when return offer discussions come around, no one will even know your name

I'd search on here for coffee chat questions. Ask about their career, what they typically work on in the team, their day to day, fine to ask one or two non-work questions but don't make it seem like a first date.

It's not weird to ask, it's normal and expected
