What are your thoughts on advanced degrees in IB?
I recently met someone who graduated from a top school with a certificate masters degree.
This inspired me a bit as I am quite interested in getting advanced education beyond my bachelors, especially considering that I did not major in finance or anything business-related. Some options I’ve considered include applying for top schools to receive a:
- Part time MBA degree
- Executive MBA (perhaps 1-2 decades into a management role)
- Certificate degree in Management or something similar
Has anyone had experience with any of these or have any insights on which would be the most optimal for IB / similar fields specifically? Or does it not matter much?
Would you mind elaborating why? Unfortunately my undergrad program is around t50 ranking so I thought getting an eDegree at a top school could help as a credential for recruitment.
Nobody in finance considers certificates or part-time degrees to be "real" degrees. The only value of an MBA is if it's the standard 2-year program at a top 7 university.
Interested as well - have thought of doing an eMBA / online masters degree at some point while working in ib or pe.
That is interesting, I have wondered about this as well. I am working in corporate banking, and there’s an associate in my group that recently added a top mba degree onto his LinkedIn saying he’s been studying there for the past 2 years, but I have seen him come into the office every day during this time. I am wondering if this is what a part time mba is, or if one can obtain a ft mba by taking night classes?
Asking as I’m actually quite interested in getting a degree similar to that if it isn’t super stressful to work while studying
Why don’t you ask him…?
There have to be a few degrees that are higher perceived value I believe. I have thought about part time and eMBA as well. I went to a so-so state college, and I have thought that a seemingly good way to both expand my network while being able to continue working and add a stronger credential to my resume would be to get an eMBA or online degree at an Ivy League to improve my educational credentials. That way people won’t view my resume and just think “ah he’s just a meathead from Rutgers/Purdue who studied art and crafts, he has an Ivy league finance degree, so his intellect is probably more in line with somebody who came from a top 30 school, like UC Davis / UCSD”
Nobody thinks that. People who have successful careers and are good at their jobs get more respect if they went to a state school because everyone knows they had to put in effort to get there.
Wtf man paying for an eDegree or an online certificate while working in IB is like buying yourself a trophy for fantasy football
I’m only in undergrad so I am not sure about how recruiters look at these degrees, but I would not consider any of these as an actual degree or as any symbol of intelligence. If you are a prospect or if you just graduated, I would still see you the same as the undergrad school you came from. If you are more experienced, then I would assume that your work experiences, accomplishments and revenue generating abilities matter far more than whatever online college degree you paid for.
I would consider signing up for an advanced degree in an area I’m interested in learning about. However I wouldn’t get a degree just for the sake of adding a nice sounding college to my LinkedIn or resume. Those degrees are now a dime a dozen. I went to a school that is not ranked high, but I don’t think my resume would look more impressive if I got an eDegree
Sorry bud, an online mba certification is not an actual degree, it's not something that holds the same as an undergraduate or masters degree
I went to a local state school because it had the best financial aid package, but my scores in high school weren't as high as they could have been either. It was difficult to both find a job and have people have confidence in my ability once I began working and I could certainly see there was some favoritism for the analysts and associates in my group who came from a stronger school for the first couple of years.
I would want to get a masters degree or eCertificate/mba from a stronger program to strengthen my resume and boost my credibility
All online and frankly most part-time degrees are pointless in this line of work. An advanced degree from a reputable, full-time, in-person program might be preferred among leadership at some firms, but not many. Beyond that, the only real benefit is that an advanced degree coupled with a successful career means that it’s possible (but never guaranteed) to “retire” into a comfortable faculty position. Otherwise, the only real benefit is getting your foot in the door if you fail to do so out of undergraduate. If you make it to Wall Street, but you’re insecure about going to a non-target, just kill it in your career. That speaks to a lot more than any degree ever could.
Do you mean teach at a university?
Yeah. Universities hire professionals with advanced degrees to join their faculty. It’s really common in law schools. It’s less common in business schools but still pretty common.
only MBA, everything else is useless
