What do resume books do?

My school like many others makes a resume book (one you have to apply to) that they send out to ~100 places. What benefit do these books actually provide; do analysts just look at them and keep the best ones in a pile for when those kids apply to fast track them to interviews or something?

If your school has a bunch of alumni or recruits often at a certain place having this book makes it easier to cut through the BS of having to actually recruit in person. They can just email a few people from the resume book if they have (upcoming) open positions, hit them up for interviews and fast track the process. Sometimes you wont even have to do technicals as people can vouch for you. Also, sometimes people will reach out to you well before the actual recruitment process occurs for advanced interviews or remind you to apply in the first place. I do find however that it's smaller firms with untraditional recruitment processes, less popular firms but still very reputable firms, or popular firms with "elite" desks that do this.
