What makes a senior banker good?

There are likely a lot of things that go into building relationships with clients that lead to transactions. In the case of senior bankers who are supposed to bring in deals, what are the best ones indexing for? I assume it's a mix of personal relationships / soft skills and hard skills like analysis and IQ (and to an extent the intellectual ability of the junior team that is cranking out the analysis), but what really matters at the end of the day?

I ask because I am in a group with incredibly sharp, analytical, industry knowledgeable (i would say more so than the average, but who knows) and high IQ seniors who are, to their credit, good at building relationships, but there are likely other bankers who are just as good. I start to think whether the deep analysis done on behalf of a client only goes so far and as a senior banker, if you want to bring in clients and transactions, that you need to reach a certain level of analytical / hard skills, yes, but a bulk comes from relationship building / personal skills. Trying to get perspective on how other analysts see their seniors, where they think they are hit / miss and what you guys think makes a good senior banker at the end of the day who brings in results.

The best senior bankers excel by mastering a combination of hard skills, soft skills, and strategic relationship-building. Here's what truly sets them apart:

  1. Client-Centric Approach: The most effective senior bankers understand what their clients truly want and need, often before the clients themselves do. They act as trusted advisors, prioritizing the client's best interests—even if it means challenging them or saying "no" when necessary. This builds trust and long-term loyalty.

  2. Commercial Instincts: Great senior bankers have a sharp sense of what drives value for their clients. They know how to deliver outcomes that align with the client's strategic objectives, which is critical for winning and retaining business.

  3. Relationship Building: While technical skills and analysis are foundational, relationships are the lifeblood of deal-making at the senior level. Success often hinges on the ability to build and maintain strong, genuine relationships with decision-makers. This includes leveraging personal rapport, but also being able to sell multiple products and create more "touch points" with clients over time.

  4. Rainmaking Ability: At the end of the day, a senior banker's success is measured by the revenue they generate. The best rainmakers focus on results, not bureaucracy or window dressing. They know how to originate deals, close them, and bring in consistent business.

  5. Delegation and Team Development: Strong senior bankers empower their junior teams by passing down relationships, providing mentorship, and giving them opportunities to grow. This not only strengthens the team but also ensures continuity in client relationships.

  6. Broad Knowledge Base: Exceptional senior bankers are not just specialists; they have a well-rounded understanding of products, sectors, law, and accounting. This allows them to deliver value without over-relying on others and positions them as credible advisors.

  7. Adaptability and Anticipation: They anticipate market trends, client needs, and internal dynamics, positioning themselves and their teams to capitalize on opportunities. This forward-thinking mindset keeps their careers and client relationships on an upward trajectory.

  8. Emotional Intelligence and Social Skills: Beyond technical expertise, the ability to read people, navigate complex interpersonal dynamics, and communicate effectively is critical. Clients often choose bankers they trust and enjoy working with, especially when multiple options are available.

Ultimately, while analytical skills and IQ are important, they are table stakes at the senior level. What truly differentiates the best senior bankers is their ability to combine these with exceptional relationship-building, commercial instincts, and the ability to deliver tangible results for their clients.
