what non-profit orgs would you join?

Guys,

Thanks for the recent topic would "you still do it if you did not have to"! It inspired me to ask (those of you who had a chance to do what they really enjoy) what non-profit orgs would you join as a volunteer?

I am finishing college in June and think of going to Africa/Latin America for a year to help people in need.

Someone mentioned Peace org, I know Terre des Hommes, any other ideas?

I would probably like to do something meaningful where I could use my knowledge and skills. Maybe micro-finance/education...

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Make-A-Wish Foundation is my favorite charity.

Homes of Hope is my least favorite. They advertise as a charity, but it is a non-profit and I am 90% sure it is a cult (I have some crazy stroies to back this up).

On a somewhat similar note, I interned part time at a local homeless shelter for most of this school year and it has completely changed my perspective on the homeless (I went in thinking they were just lazy and/or stupid, but most of them are just going through some really tough times).

Kiva sounds relevant: "Fluency or advanced communication ability in French, Spanish, Russian, or other language in a country where Kiva has a presence Background in economics/finance/consulting will greatly enhance your ability to provide support to the host MFI" Also non-US citizen can join, which is my case. And I do speak French & Russian. Thanks a lot! Any other ideas?

International Justice Mission.

Probably the people in this world who have it the worst are the victims of human trafficking, and the employees/volunteers get to see how their work helps the world on a very human level.

If I were feeling really highbrow and weren't working 80 hours/week, the Order of St. John would be really cool to volunteer with. They're actually the modern organization for the original Knights Hospitallier and today they're heavily involved in international releif efforts.

that is the question: first make money and then make a difference... or vice versa thanks for the ideas and feel free to add new ones

Agree. We already mentioned Kiva which does micro finance. Do you know any particular NPO that would accept as a fund manager a finance rookie straight out of college with some internship experience and cfa level I ? Let me know if you do.

Most microfinancing institutions are out in Asia, but I have a friend who is actually summering there this year. PM me if you want more info. Also, MS and CS have large microfinancing initiatives if that is of interest to anyone (the groups themselves are quite small though).
