What Now - Unsuccessful in landing an analyst position
If I am unsuccessful in landing an analyst position in i-banking directly out of college, what type of career/position would you all recommend I take in order to best position myself for an analyst position in i-banking 2-3 years after I graduate?
Thanks Everyone
i don't know from personal experience but i've talked to several people about this. the MOST IMPORTANT thing to do is to make/keep connections with friends or other employees of banks. occasionally an odd opportunity will come up and the first place they'd look is to people they know. that said, you obviously won't be getting a job like this if you're working retail sales. try to land a gig in accounting, maybe consulting, some type of business development at a f-500 firm, etc. really anything that will give you a good business experience.
Business development and consulting. We tend to look favorably on consulting types. It doesn't have to be MBB, but those are obviously the best.
Haha, I have never thought of MBB as a backup... seriously if you land a job at MBB, you shouldn't have too much of a problem getting IB interviews. If you do end up in MBB and REALLY want to do ibanking, just do 2 years, b-school, then go as an associate and skip the whole analyst experience.
Thanks for the recommendations all. If you don't mind, could you provide some company names in business development? Thanks again.
Business development is just a strategic arm of a big corporation. You can work in corporate development for IBM, Microsoft, Google, Capital One, etc.

But these are not easy to get, at least Microsoft and Google arne't
Why don't you get into a sector you're interested in: Oil/Gas; Technology; Procter/Gamble... there are so many interesting companies you should apply to...
What's your major?
I'm a finance major. I attend a non-target school so investment banking is a difficult industry to get into..especially with the current market conditions. I have an interview at P&G for their accounting and finance program. Any opinions on this?
Thanks again guys
Also interested in responses for this. Attending a non-target school but my goal is IB.
has a great program. My cousin did something in their marketing/advertising sector, but it was a very similar program in that it had a specified length of time and ppl who 'graduated' from the program got into great b-schools (she went to HBS). I would imagine P&G sets you up nicely, and you'll probably be able to lateral over to ibanking after 2 years (or failing that, at least go to a good bschool).
Keep in mind that P&G is much more of a marketing-driven firm, and finance is not nearly as well-known or well-respected at the brand management positions.
why do you want to go straight to B school after a 2 year stint.
when i go to b school, i want minimum 4 years under my belt.... period.
graduated and left the program when the market was in rough shape. P&G also paid for some of her b-school, so it wasn't a bad deal.
