The best analysts get recruited to the buyside. Would say 10-20% stay behind or get wooed by the MDs selling them dreams of constant pitches and stacks of cash. Nobody is entitled to the buyside, and these roles are very difficult to procure. This is one thing a lot of analysts don’t realize until they go through the interviews and jump through all the hoops. With that said, more people are staying because MFs have been increasing their analyst classes and direct promoting from within, thus less demand for banking talent.
You mention more analysts are staying because there are less mf spots, but don't most analysts end up at mm/umm anyway, with a small percentage at mfs?
Yes, however MFs have large class sizes, so the trend still puts a decent dent into the pool of positions, which is already tiny.
Fewer than 5 out of class of 80 at an EB
Most of them didn't do buyside recruiting altogether
very helpful data point thank you. Were more exits from your class to pe than hf, or was it a closer split
No worries, happy to provide a data point
Majority went to PE, some went to Corp dev, a few into hedge fund/VC and a few left finance
So what did they do then if they didn't do buyside recruiting? Anything else would be a major pay cut.
Those 4/5 people went A2A, I was just noting that most of them didn't even participate in the pe process
