What Should I Do with the Next Five Years?

Hey, everyone.

I just want to go ahead and give some background before I get started. I go to a non-target school (University of North Carolina at Greensboro). I was accepted into NC State but I chose to go to UNCG for location purposes, financial reasons, and friends. I first started out doing physics but switched to economics a during the spring semester of my senior year. I am on track to finish college in three years (I'll graduate in May, 2018).

I am now interested in going into banking, with eyes on IB, commercial banking, and wealth management. I didn't fully understand networking or what I should be doing in regards to finding internships/setting myself up for the future until about a few months ago. That being said, I have no internships under my belt, but I have been working jobs since my senior year of high school. So I have work experience, just not the right work experience.

I'm curious how you guys think I should plan the next five years. I would love to undertake an IB internship/job opportunity during the school year (The only three investment banks in Greensboro that I know of are Cary Street Partners, Bachmann Advisory Group, and Wharton Gladden). Merrill Lynch and Bank of America are here too but I don't think they have any opportunities available. I have emailed all three firms and am awaiting replies.

I'd love to work as an IB in New York or LA, but I know this is pretty far-fetched if I can't even land opportunities near me.

Should I just go IB internship at one of those three firms --> analyst position at accepted firm --> Hope for a NY spot?

What should I do if I can't land an IB internship?

Thanks.
