He’s giving what he’s perceived to be a young hungry kid with a lot of potential a shot. If you play your cards right, you can leave a good impression on him to which the opportunity from there is obvious. Get him to talk about how he got to where he was, his story, be informed about the history of the EB and what’s makes them different, ask him for advice on what he would do to be as successful as he is if he were your age today etc. make it a great call!

Spot on

A few other tips

  1. Be prepared for it to cancel and reschedule 5x+. That’s life
  2. Don’t make it transactional on the call. Follow up with a nice note asking him if it’s not too much trouble to pass on to his HR / recruiting team
  3. Most of these guys grew up in an era of tailored suits and Hermes ties. Look the part grooming and dress wise.Doesnt need to be fancy but jacket, white or blue shirt and tie even for a zoom
  4. Emphasise learn the history of his firm and his background. If he came from a Lehman / DLJ / Pre IPO Goldman  background feel free to raise that and ask
  5. Ask his tips for someone starting out in the industry. That’s a no brainer
  6. Make it clear you will run through walls. This resonates with people of that generation

Thanks so much for all the tips! The interview is over zoom, but what is stressing me the most is whether I should grind and hone my technicals before the interview or not? Because I asked for a call expecting obviously nothing out of it but he ended up scheduling interview, so im just not really sure how to prepare technicals wise? and whether this is like an interview or just a networking call? The firm is really small, and they don’t even have a career section in their website

Absolutely these points, but specially Nr. 4. There is invariably always nostalgia on these times, probably you can find out where he started or at which form he made most of hir rise to the top.

In addition, find out some deals his company has advise on. Pick one or two. Beyond the deal itself, which you should also read about, I'd focus on the customer relationship. How he came to that client, what were the triggers, special highlights /moments (e.g. bod approvals, negotiation, etc.) , any follow-up deals etc... that shaped that relationship. At that level, often times the connection with a client (company, or a particular CEO etc.) outlasts the deals.

Make proper use of this chance, be polite, be gracious, be grateful, and good luck, keep us posted how it went!
