Where to live in London near Knightsbridge?

Hey to keep this short I’ll be moving to London in the next few weeks to start a new job in Knightsbridge.

My employer will reimburse me ~£1500 for housing.

My only requirements are (1) my own place (so no roommate) (2) private washroom (I heard in London it’s common to have communal washrooms) (3) has to be within 20 mins of public transport to Knightsbridge (strong preference for something walking distance though, so ~30 min or less walk)

Is there any place that meets these requirements?

Maybe around Earls Court/West Brompton/Chelsea or South Kensington/Belgravia/Victoria if you’re looking for somewhere that’s within walking distance. Unfortunately areas in/near Knightsbridge are expensive so you may have to consider living slightly further out — the trade off is the further you go out, the longer the commute time and the more expensive the commute is weighed against cheaper rents.

Also Piccadilly line is the only underground train that stops at Knightsbridge Station so ideally you’d look at areas on the line within either 20 mins east or west of Knightsbridge.

Areas to consider within 20 mins using public transport:

  • Fulham/Hammersmith/Barons Court (around 9-12 mins on train for Hammersmith & Barons Court, Fulham is around 15 mins by bus) — can include Chiswick Park if you’re willing to travel ~20 mins west of [insert firms address]
  • Battersea/Nine Elms/Clapham Junction (tube links may be longer)
  • Notting Hill Gate/Paddington/Marble Arch/Maida Vale (potentially) (could be doable with a ~15 min bus or train journey)
  • Holborn/Covent Garden (on the Piccadilly line which is ideal for commute, around 10 mins commute)
  • Baker Street (15 mins commute by bus, longer by train)
  • King’s Cross (15 mins commute by train, on the piccadilly line like Holborn/Covent Garden, also ideal if you like the area and/or find a decent place there)

Hey thanks for the detailed answer. Just one point of clarification - you mentioned that the Piccadilly line is the only underground train that stops at Knightsbridge, is there any massive advantages / disadvantages of taking an underground train as opposed to an overground train or bus if the commute time is roughly the same?

The thing is that West Brompton is the nearest overground station from Knightsbridge - if you end up moving in/around Earls Court, this isn't bad, however, the overground doesn't stop anywhere near Knightsbridge which could make the commute slightly longer/inconvenient.

If you take the underground train and live in an area like Earls Court/Hammersmith/Chiswick Park (possibly) or Holborn/Covent Garden/King's Cross, the commute is relatively simple - it's 1 train and no longer than 20 min either east or west of Knightsbridge, depending on where you move to. Taking the bus isn't a bad option if you consider areas like Baker Street/Marble Arch/Notting Hill Gate as these could be done on 1 bus or a short train journey. The thing with taking bus is that there's traffic which could make your commute longer and possibly less convenient.

Your housing budget will affect what area(s) you consider, and ultimately your commute. You can search the journey from [your firm's address] to [area you want to live in] to see what type of commute would be easiest/most convenient for you.

Completely opposed to sharing is kinda tough, especially in one of the nicest residential areas of London.

I mean I own my flat (not Knightsbridge) and still have a flatmate 💀
