Why am I so stressed / how to mitigate it

So I'm about 2 months in to my FT analyst role at a good group. People are nice as well. But all week long I feel a constant looming pressure over my head, and I feel like it's impacting my life in many ways (diet / mood / temper). I'm not even super invested in staying in banking for more than 2 years, so I want to make this a time to absorb skills and grow as a professional, but it's really impacting my life. Performance has been fine so far as well (no negative feedback, just comments that I make sure to take note of). Thank you.

I feel like I learned this from my dad who always worked too hard and was stressed. I think avenues to let it out like exercise and time with friends/family is important, but you can't let it spill in to those parts of life otherwise it just all blends together. Also having clear defined task lists and knowing what is complete/what is coming up can be helpful, so you have a mental framework versus just everything just seeming never ending.

I felt the same when I first started. Just know that it gets better, I'm sure about that.

You'll start understanding and appreciating the work you do a little more (I still think banking isn't for me, but at least now I know what I'm doing)

You'll find your footing within the team / culture / cliques

You'll also realise what tasks are actually important and what are not. That helps a lot with pressure (I used to execute every single task as if it's going to make or break my career)

It will get better naturally with time. In the meantime, find things to look forward to - time off, quiet periods (Xmas), etc. Take it a week at a time and soon you'll be flying. Hang in there!

Same. I think this is just the nature of banking.

You are constantly stressed out because you know that the smallest mistake will get you shit. As such, you are constantly worrying about having made mistakes. Did you do make a double space in the footnote on page 97? Do the multiples tie across all pages? Did you remember to implement all comments from your Assoc on page 38?

You are also stressed out because everyone is trying to load you with as much work as possible all the time. Take on too much work? Now you're stressed because you will struggle to meet deadlines. Take on too little work? Now you're stressed out because your teams will think you aren't pulling your weight.

Lastly, something that stresses me out is always having to be available. Even on a weekend when I don't have any work I am stressed out because I know that I am just an email away from getting my weekend blown up. If that email hits my inbox they expect me to be up and running within 30-60 mins.

Lot of good content above on why you are stressed.

In terms of how to mitigate it (and it’s important you do this sooner than later) here are some things that have helped me

1/ Doing something Physical - as simple as a walk around the block or your floor, a quick push ups near your desk or the best, a good game (like table tennis) even for half hour sometime during the day (an MD I know used to go for a swim near Chelsea piers) helps to bring down the adrenaline levels (Adrenaline is a fight or flight hormone which expects physical confrontation, and you better give it if you want to save your body). Now I know it’s not always possible to do it, but try

2/ get into a positive loop - if you have 10 things to do, take the simplest and easiest one and hit it out of the park, raise ur confidence, that begets more confidence, work your way through the list of To-Dos, ‘Get busy doing’

3/ Have a friend-preferably from out of ur group but may be ur class or from your school - have a cup of coffee or just hang for a few mts, my fav is to hang with seniors who were part of the group but have moved onto a different group within the bank

Hope this helpes

Ashwaganda will help.

You need perspective. You're in your own head too much.

Do something physical and get an outlet.

In my 20s I discovered Stoic philosophy and it helped me massively with dealing with stress.
