Why IB - include recent deal in the answer?
Aside from the standard answer for 'why IB' - learning curve, responsibility, fast-paced etc etc - I was thinking of mentioning a recent deal in an upcoming interview.
The reason is that it went very well for the company being acquired (an educational company in the EU) and resulted in better results and employability for its students. Would it be good/ok to mention in the way of 'IB is interesting, you learn a lot, AND it can have a genuinely positive impact on society, here's why', or is that too hardo/weird to mention?
Yes - in fact this is something you should be doing. Deals + people u talked to is typically the formula for why this bank
Perfect, thanks - I'm prepping a doc to take with me on the plane there with about 4 deals of the bank and another recent deal to read through and absorb so I can deploy them in a couple different answers. I'm pretty sure I'm the only non-target at the assessment centre/superday so I want to be as prepped as possible.
.
Yes do talk about deals but I would be careful going too far with the genuine impact on society thing. Deals are good to mention but I would kind of furrow my brow if you started saying IB is a societal good lol
Ok yes, that's exactly what I was worried about. I'll temper it a little. Thank you!
the impact to society part is just weird. It's like saying you want to go to MIT because there are some girls there that are actually attractive. 1 it's a bit condescending because it implies generally it doesn't have a positive impact. 2 if that's an important criteria for you, why would you want to go someplace that "sort of" meets your criteria?
Totally understood. How would you recommend including a deal in the why IB answer instead? (or not at all)
Devil’s advocate: I would think any student’s “genuine” interest in any deal is total bullshit and pandering. You can definitely mention recent deals in passing but I wouldn’t anchor your why IB answer (or any other) to it or spend much time weaving it into the core of any story. Others may feel differently.
Would you say it's still bs and pandering if I for ex. mentioned it along the lines of working with companies at some of the most interesting points in their lifecycle, SUCH AS etc or better just to leave it entirely for later? Thank you, btw
I think that’s a better approach. Most people are in this space for selfish reasons, largely for the money. There are some that get a thrill out of doing deals but they’re a rare breed and you’re more likely to be interviewed by people that will roll their eyes at grandiose interview answers, especially from students. I think you’re fine to include recent deals but what you want to do is ultimately link it back to how it benefits your personal career aspirations (in a tactful way) as that’s the language everyone really speaks at the end of the day. Anything else feels fluffy and disingenuous.
I also want to caveat that these are just my thoughts - other posters will inevitably disagree and others will agree. It comes down to the interviewer and the vibes you’re getting from them. I wish I had a more concrete answer than that. 😬
