Will a Non-Core Year 1 Fail Matter If I Get a First Class Overall?

Hi all,

I’m a student at a UK uni. In Year 1, I failed one non-core elective module. It doesn’t impact my progression or classification, I’m still moving on to Year 2, and only Year 2 and Year 3 are weighted 50% each toward my final degree. Year 1 is purely formative. The fail will show on my transcript, but if I do well in Year 2 and 3 and end up with a First Class Honours, will recruiters actually care? Could this affect offers at the onboarding stage, or is it irrelevant if I meet the 2:1/First requirement?

Would really appreciate insights from anyone who’s been through SA/grad recruiting in London or has HR experience.

Thanks!

Intern in IB - Cov:

yes. it will matter. whyd you fail it?

Hey, I failed that elective because I lost two close family members just days before the exam. I didn’t file for mitigating circumstances at the time because I thought I’d pass, but I clearly underestimated how much the grief and stress affected me. I’ve done much better since and have been focused on maintaining strong academic performance. Just trying to understand how much early setbacks like this actually matter in the long run.

I'm sorry for your loss. I would try to tell the UG admissions office (not sure how it works there), but I know someone at a uni in the U.S. who was able to retake the course, and the new letter grade replaced the old one because he/she failed. Another thing you could try to do is retake their exam(s) due to two losses in the family assuming you also have the proof for that. I would definitely try to study up and try to get them to allow you to retake the course in the summer so you can still grad in 3-4 years or just retake the exam.

Thank you and I actually reached out. They have allowed me to resit it (capped at 40%). So I think I will be fine ig. Life’s weird.
