Will FT Job Offer be Rescinded for Academic Dishonesty (Cheating: F in Class that I have to Retake)?

I signed a job offer with a smaller but recognized IB in NY last month and they had my transcript with them (which I sent them) during the interview process. However, I just found out that I will get an F in a class I am taking this semester (my first semester of senior year) and that I have to retake it next semester. I will not get a notation on my transcript of cheating.

Everything on the transcript they had during the interview process is true, but I am worried whether they will rescind my offer because of cheating/an F my first semester senior year when I send my official post-graduation transcript to them. Since I did not finish the semester yet, the transcript they have does not have any of my grades from this semester on it.

The only offer condition regarding grades is that my "official post-graduation transcript has grades that are consistent with those formerly represented to the company."

There is no GPA minimum. Will they even check senior year grades?

What do you all think I should do?

also interested to know why...Its gonna be tough to explain an F but cheating sounds like a pretty bad excuse to give your potential employer

So you cheated in a class, got an F and will have to re-take, but it will never show up on your final transcript? And all you have to do is provide your final transcript to them at graduation?

Well you can go one of two routes.

  1. Send them an update and let them know you failed a class for cheating. You will most likely get your offer rescinded.

  2. Don't tell them, quietly retake the class in the spring, and send them an updated transcript at the end of the year. It's probably the lower road morally, but its honestly unlikely that they'll find out unless you alert them.

Kind of just depends on the circumstances and your moral compass.

All these people really have no clue what they are talking about. You would be absolutely stupid to tell them yourself. Just retake the class and get a grade. If they somehow see the F at some point make up some excuse like you made a mistake and thought you had dropped the class early in the semester and wanted to move it to your second semester and they you retook it and got an A. I don’t know something like that don’t listen to these fools

I live my life with 3 principals when it comes to situations like this

  1. Admit Nothing
  2. Deny Everything
  3. Demand Proof

In this case, Rule 1 applies, Chances are, your FT offer's HR department is not going to be doing any in-depth background checks on you after they did their initial check.

Retake the class in the spring, learn your lesson, (not to cheat in the first place of course but, more than that not to be so careless) pass the class, and move on.

You're lucky you get this chance at redemption, if this had happened in the spring semester you would be SOL. It may not be the most moral decision but, the bottom line is that the second that your FT offer finds out about this, you won't have a offer.

Also, I'd delete this post and not tell anyone else about this situation other than those already in the know. It can doing nothing to help you and is only ammo against you.

If everything you gave them at the point at which they gave you the offer is true, why would you shoot yourself in the head and tell them you failed? Just retake the class and send along your updated transcript when they request it. Overall they should just check that there isn't some massive delta between your final GPA and the GPA they received when they issued the offer.

Don't put yourself on some moral high ground by considering whether or not you should tell your bank. It's damage control time and you don't need to listen to the internet as to why you should feel conflicted on whether or not to report this to your future employer - literally what good could come out of that in any given situation? Use your head

In the end, the original grade ended up getting switched from an F to a C and I didn't have to retake the class. Like before, the official post-graduation transcript I have to send them will not have any notation of the incident.

Is my situation better now? Do you think HR will notice the C or bring this up?

Is your situation better now?! You don't have a situation now. An F could have been a problem. A C, at most, raises an eyebrow. Be prepared to provide an explanation on the off chance you're asked, but before you do, completely remove the word "cheat" from your vocabulary. You got really lucky here.
