Will lying about being gay help me land an IB internship

Kinda a joke post.. but also kinda not.

On every application I have filled out for 2024 SA roles, there's a diversity section, and as a straight white guy, every time I fill it out I feel like my chances of getting the role falls. Can I just lie about being apart of LGBTQ+? Like how could they prove that?

Also there's all these programs for diverse students that look very beneficial. Would being "gay" for a few days be a bad idea?

by the way im not going to do this i just wanted to pick yalls brains about this after a convo with a friend

There are people who do it but ethnically and morally its wrong imo. If you get caught in the long run you would probably be blacklisted from the street. I know you said its a half joke so I hope you are smarter then faking such a large part of your life. If anyone found out even at your school they'd have you plastered on the wall...

Remember the controversy about diversity program abuse out of IU Kelley late last year?

maybe bisexual would be a better play. impossible to prove wrong. if I remember correctly the whole IU Kelley was based on race which is a bit more aggressive haha. imo deciding who gets positions based on race/gender/orientation instead of merit is messed up, but thats probably just because people like me are the ones getting shafted. Only additional considerations besides merit should low income/immigrants imo

They may make you “prove” that you’re gay. It’s not an uncommon practice to bring a gay male into a room and have you make out with him to prove your sexuality if you tick that box during your application process.

Keep in mind that HR loves gay / bi / LGBTQ people. However, the people you will be working with typically do not. As such, there is a risk that your class of white males in their 20s won't appreciate your sexual orientation as much as HR. I always check the "do not want to respond" box on this type of question. Should at least improve my chances vs. being a white heterosexual male...

As an actual gay IB person, faking gayness is a bad idea. We gay people have sth called gaydar, and we can detect pretty early on straight people who pretend to be gay. Gay people are also very open, and if u ever are required to show up to an event for LGBTIQ+ people in IB, your fellow IB interns/analysts will ask you what kind of gay you are. If you act weird or hesitate, it’s pretty telling to the rest of them.

Also, being bisexual doesn’t make it easier. HR knows that many people put down bisexual to check the box. I know people who have done it and didn’t receive any advantage during recruiting. That’s because HR looks for LGBTIQ+ candidates who are quite loud and proud for diversity representation. For instance, I run an LGBTIQ+ activism organization.

For the final point: do you want to be known as the “gay” person forever, when that’s not your identity? Your participation in diversity programs will be noted, and you will be assigned to gay mentors who help you and can tell if you are gay or not. If being gay is not sth you identify with, not worth the risk + burden + faking.

Real talk I wanna say 20-30% of O4U last year was faking being LGBT for recruiting but a lot of those folks didn't get offers so YMMV? I feel like most people are pretty good at picking up on it at this point
