Working in Greece

Going to work in Greece as full time IB Analyst at a firm that does the most deals in Greece. From Canada. First IB job. Would I be able to go back to Canada/the US? How useful is foreign experience? Does an experience in a big firm in small countries look good at all?

I assume you have some kind of connection with Greece to be doing this (half Greek or speak the language at least). IB there can be a sweet gig given low cost of living and decent comp - obviously lower than major EU hubs. The GR market is in a really good place atm with strong dealflow across products (more capital markets less M&A). In terms of sectors FIG is driving the market with Infra/Utilities/Energy being 2nd place and then all others. Some RE, HC, C&R and maybe Tech. Privatisations have been a big driver of dealfow but that's largely over now with the de-investments from the banking sector and airport IPO soon, so private sector is stepping up. NPLs are also mostly sold now. The truth is that large cap / landmark deals are dominated by the big guys (GS, MS are miles ahead and then you often see BofA, Citi, UBS for banks, RTH and Laz for RX with the latter two pricing ridiculously low fees to win mandates). Implication is that local shops - banks, boutiques and Big4 - have to work with what's left. Sometimes you see a foreign bank working together with a local but that's mostly for FIG work and the heavy lifting is almost always done in London. If a local bank Co advises on a cap raising that will be to target local investors etc. As such second implication is that you'll mostly be working with lower calibre/brandname/firepower type of investors and experience will get a discount for int'l banks. Such a role will be great for local mingling and connections but will be a challenge to lateral in the UK/US/Canada in reputable shops. Other exit is Greek / emerging markets teams in London which is a good fit but you'll be surprised how many relevant and qualified Greeks are competing for these. If you have nothing else take it and don't worry about lateraling for now. You might end up very happy too and not wanting to leave. P.S. Mobile app sucks and can't do paragraphs, apols.
