Wtf is Restructuring???

Applied to a Restructuring IB Summer 2026 position cause someone told me smart people do it. Now I have an interview in 4 days and I still don't know what restructuring is. Why do people care about it, what makes it interesting, and are there specific questions I should look out for?

Restructuring in IB involves helping companies that are struggling financially or facing bankruptcy. Think of it as a financial "doctor" for businesses. When a company can't pay back its debts or is losing money, investment bankers step in to:

1. Diagnose the Problem

2. Create a Recovery Plan

3. Negotiate with Stakeholders

4. Guide Company Through Bankruptcy

YW, LOL!

Everyone’s unintentionally getting Rx interviews but I’ve specifically recruited for it and have nothing 😪😪

Rx is a financial advisory service by smaller banks/EBs (these banks don’t have trading desks, banks w trading desks like BBs can’t have Rx groups because they can’t legally restructure debt that they’re also trading). It is a capital structure solution for companies who have distressed debt and need a capital restructuring. It used to be very Ch11 bankruptcy focused, but nowadays you’ll see firms advising on stressed debt and providing proactive solutions. It’s a super cool industry + recession proof. Keep in mind that Rx interviews are known to be extremely technical and Rx focused; the bankers I spoke with recommended both the standard WS 400 questions ALONG with specialized Rx interview questions that you can find online. Good luck! Let us know how it goes
