Career Resources
I'm confused why youre so sure that you can't get a full time offer at the firm. If your team likes you enough then they'll recommend that another group hires you full time. I have a ton of friends who were in very similar situations but the firm didn't want to let a good employee go so they were placed somewhere else. This would also give you an opportunity to tell them what you're interested in and get out of risk sphere.
As an intern, you should definitely be networking in your current role anyway.. meet other teams, find an informal mentor, talk to your HR rep... ask others for advice, people LOVE giving it.
Use your current position as a networking platform. HR will likely only get in your way when it comes to upgrading your job, so start reaching out to people in other departments and other companies. You have to take it upon yourself to exploit every opening you see until you're employed at the position you want....until then, do not stop.
I have been networking. My HR rep doesn't seem to help much. Tells me they will get back to me with more information and never do. Call a few days later to follow up and they don't answer. Hopefully they do place me somewhere else.
''How do you stay motivated?''
Get a job you like.

Get as many people on your side as you can. I don't know enough to walk you through it, and honestly, you're going to have to learn office politics. Also, try and deal directly with IBD, as they have more power than HR.
Network with people at other companies: get out and meet them. You have to learn to network? Get the M&I guide, and also try the one here. PM people here. Go to bars, church, the gym, whatever.....just meet people. Use linkedIn, your alumni network.
do the things you'll thank urself for later.
^ how i stay motivated. the downfall to this mantra is that it's pretty outcome-oriented.... make sure u are focusing on the process and learning / absorbing as much as u can along the way.... god i feel like a tool quoting my management professor....
Here are some other ways of saying the same thing: "Do yourself a favor and do it right the first time around." "The lazy man works twice: once wrong, the second time right." "There are two major pains in life: the pain of discipline, and the pain of regret."
