advice for FT recruiting w/ terrbile summer intern position
hey,
So I need some advice: I struck out during recruiting and am currently at a terrible internship before my senior year. What is the best type of job I could get given my situation. I would like to focus networking this summer on realistic prospects
Will be a Senior at Brown/Cornell
Math/Econ double major with 3.3 (I know that this is bad)
Internship before junior year at a no name hedge fund
Internship currently before Senior year at a no name investment consultancy w/ like 40 people. Not learning anything, no impressive people, and they are not looking to hire any interns for full time. It was my only offer.
Active on campus: play club lacrosse, run a small club
I don’t really care what field I am in after graduation I just want the most prestigious job possible. I was thinking of focusing on firms such Mercer consulting, HLHZ, or maybe UBS regional bank or some middle markets. Could you guys give me some names or examples of companies I would be competitive at? Also does anyone have any tips for making the most of my lame internship?
Thanks!
Make the most out of your internship. You only have X amount of weeks to do something impressive/add value to the company
You should be networking already. If you're not working long hours there's no excuse for you to not make phone calls/have informationals.
"I don’t really care what field I am in after graduation I just want the most prestigious job possible" attitude is not going to get you a job.
To echo much of what wutangfinancial has already said, the first thing you have to do is get serious about the business. Having a goal of working at a prestigious company regardless of field or function is a recipe for disaster. It's fine to be interested in Banking or Consulting (thought they are quite different), but you have to really know why each, what you will be doing in each, how you can contribute to the team at each and why you will enjoy an analyst program at each - otherwise, who the hell will want to hire you. Next, you absolutely need to network - going to Brown or Cornell UGrad, there will certainly be several alumni to whom you can reach out/send an email to seek some advice and check for potential opportunities. Again, I doubt an alum will want to help you out and put their name out there if you have no idea what you are really interested in doing. Finally, your internship may not be "prestigious," but a 40 person consulting firm is surely something that can offer you a decent base skill set and some solid experiences, if you really want to make the most of it. You have to be proactive, and look for ways to make the most of your time there. Then, it's a matter of punching up the resume and attacking the FT recruiting season.

prop trading firms. they don't pay much attention to your past experience. as long as you ace their math/probability/brainteaser focused interview rds
How dare you put Brown and Cornell by each other, separated by brackets. I hope my alumni school never gets associated with pot-smokin Brown hippies.
weak, mainstreet. i was expecting more.
