Advice on how to best handle incoming SAs and Full-Times
I am on a pretty lean deal team, so the task of getting the interns and full-time analysts up to speed will largely fall on me. Granted they will have the formal training program for a few weeks beforehand, but I will have to take the lead on group-specific training.
To the second-year analysts and above out there, what kind of advice do you have on how to be a good mentor? My problem is that I am not very good at explaining concepts to others, even though I understand them myself. I just don't want word to get back to the associates and the rest of the team that I am not being helpful.
If the part you are worried about is the teaching, I would recommend writing things down and either passing those notes along or referencing them when teaching. It helps formalize your thoughts in a concise and focused manner which should improve your ability to communicate what you are trying to get across.
To the mentorship point, if the burden is going to fall largely on you and you want to have the reputation of being a strong mentor, the easiest way to gain rep is to have an "open door" and allow people to message you and ask questions about anything (not being dismissive or pushing off responding for hours on end). Yes, it will increase your workload but you will be seen as someone they trust to ask both the big and little things.
