American Express FT Undergraduate Recruiting
Hi I'm a senior at non-target school for American Express hoping to land a position in their financial analyst program. I applied for their internship this past summer in the fall shortly after it was posted and was unsuccessful. Have a 3.6 GPA, Finance/Accounting major, Econ minor and have had five financial services internships throughout my college career all but one were paid. Interned with a Big Four this summer in audit (received full time offer) which really isn't my cup of tea. I've networked extensively with alumni from my university at Amex and while they have all been willing to talk to me they don't really have a way to pass me along to the recruiters since Amex has a decentralized recruiting process.
Amex is easily my number one employer out of school and I'm really trying to give it my best shot. I've considered traveling to attend info sessions at target schools or career fairs to gain an introduction to a recruiter. My understanding is they pull extensively from their summer internship but will begin hiring in November/December. Can anyone share thoughts or advice? Thank you very much.
Jamie Dimon got his start at Amex, granted, with a different job than most, and he's doing OK.
I had a similar experience; was able to connect with a couple of guys, and got some great advice and information, but no luck getting referred.
This is from an email last month:
"I would say that no, Amex does do quite a bit of analyst hiring off the website as well as through their OCR. But to be honest, I've heard that we're having a small hiring freeze for the next few months. This is something that the company does fairly routinely though, in an effort to not just cut costs but to also encourage the inter-company movement to other teams and positions as I've mentioned before."
Thanks for the feedback everyone! I'm looking at attending other schools that are Amex targets (facilitated by friends at those schools) but there aren't any coming up in my area. Anyone have advice about dropping a line to recruiters? I have the name and email of one, figure it can't hurt but am extremely interested in AMEX.
"I would say that some firms would frown upon applying for multiple jobs within the company, but Amex is not one of them. For the people here, one of the most important things they look for is an excitement and desire to work specifically for Amex and so if you are applying for multiple jobs, that just shows them your desire to work for the company."
Get to talking with the recruiter asap.
Thanks for your reply. I'm just worried they will be taken off by me reaching out. I got their contact info from a friend of a friend and don't have anyone to facilitate and introduction at this time. I'm reaching out to my connections at Amex to see if they would be willing provide an introduction by email even (nothing formal). Hopefully one of them will be able to do so. Any advice on cold contacting recruiters? I know email is best since it puts them in more control of the pace of response (calling can catch them off guard and is generally not well received nowadays). Any pointers?
Greatly appreciated.
