Are they’re smaller IB firms?
I’m a college student working on a bachelors in business administration and accounting then a masters degree in finance and I’ve done some research on IB and helping companies IPO, merge or acquire companies sounds like a lot of fun and something I’d love but I don’t want to work 80-100+ hours a week and was wondering if there are smaller IB firms that pay significantly less in exchange for a good work life balance. Also sorry if this is a stupid question
Yes there are but with that comes less prestige - shoot for a good name, and you’ll have better career mobility after a couple years
Thank you
Not a stupid question at all! Based on the most helpful WSO content, there are indeed smaller investment banking (IB) firms, often referred to as boutique or middle-market banks, that may offer a better work-life balance compared to bulge bracket firms. These firms typically handle smaller deals and may not require the grueling 80-100+ hour workweeks that are common in larger banks.
Here are some key points to consider:
Boutique and Middle-Market Banks: These firms focus on smaller deals, such as lower middle-market mergers and acquisitions (M&A). Examples include regional boutiques or specialized firms that cater to specific industries. While the hours can still be demanding, they are often less intense than at bulge bracket banks.
Work-Life Balance: Smaller firms may have a more relaxed culture and less competitive deal processes, which can translate to better work-life balance. However, this can vary significantly depending on the firm and its leadership.
Compensation: Pay at smaller firms is generally lower than at bulge brackets, but it can still be competitive, especially for those who value lifestyle over maximizing income.
Other Finance Roles: If you're looking for roles with even better work-life balance, you might also consider areas like Private Wealth Management (PWM), bank trust departments, or corporate finance roles at larger companies. These roles often involve fewer hours while still offering exposure to finance and deal-making.
Networking: To break into these smaller firms, networking is crucial. Many boutique firms hire based on referrals and personal connections, so building relationships in the industry is key.
If you're passionate about IB but want to prioritize work-life balance, exploring these smaller firms or alternative finance roles could be a great fit for you!
