I haven't found a thread on the topic so I thought I would create one. While working for these institutions as a summer intern and from the perspective of a summer intern, how would someone know they will be getting an offer or they won't. Side note as an intern what are some bad signs to be seen just in general.

That's a great question given the accelerated recruiting timeline. I can speak from personal experience as an intern not getting picked up and then in another internship getting the return offer. I think unless you are at a shop where everyone is brutally honest about everything you will find that people are cagey about return offers if you aren't getting one. They will use language like "we are uncertain about headcount right now but we hope to have space" or "I'm not involved with recruiting". During my first internship my boss was using that exact language while also giving me positive feedback. Bear in mind few people will tell you that you aren't coming back. During internships where your only other experience is whatever high school or college campus job you worked this is extremely problematic. Conversely you will have a good idea that you are getting a return offer if the language is explicitly in tilt to a return "we are trying to get hr to bring you on" since nobody is going to have a problem being the bearer of good news. At the end of the day you should simply arrange a coffee (zoom?) meeting with your boss or line manager midway through the internship and simply ask if you are on track for a return offer. Maybe someone has other experiences but internship to internship that was the noticeable difference in understanding my status.
Particularly virtually, the biggest thing is probably showing enthusiasm and actively asking for work or to be involved in some capacity. I think staffers/senior management pick up on lacking enthusiasm particularly quickly, and their perception of how dedicated, committed, and interested you are is likely the biggest determinant of whether or not you'll get a return. In general, as long as you don't miss deadlines, give them low-qual deliverables, show no interest or aptitude for growth in the area, or do something else stupid, you'll probably be fine. If you do any of those things, then that's probably a bad sign.
no news is usually not-so-good news. if you're on track you'll usually hear about it - as said above nobody's compelled to be cagey if the news is good
if they don't enjoy talking to you while peeing next to each other in the urinals. You need to be the one initiating your return offer conversations with the VP/MD's at the pee stall. Otherwise, odds of a return offer are slim to none
I'll make sure while I initiate conversation at the pee stall to maintain intense eye contact throughout so they know I mean business.... if I don't ever post on here again it's because I got arrested LMFAO!
