Berkley Research Group - is it close to restructuring IB?

Hi community,

Recently came acroos the BRG group. As it looks they require pretty similar skillset to what is needed from RX bankers. However, they position as a consulting company rather than RX IB. Anyone knows how it similar to what the HL or other shops do? What are the interview process, job, exit ops etc.? Would appreciate any information

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about Berkeley Research Group (BRG) and its relation to restructuring investment banking (IB):

  1. Positioning and Skillset:

    • BRG is indeed positioned as a consulting company rather than a traditional restructuring IB.
    • They require a skillset similar to what is needed for restructuring bankers, focusing on financial analysis, valuation, and advisory services.
  2. Comparison to Other Firms:

    • While BRG is a consulting firm, it operates in a space that overlaps with restructuring IB, similar to firms like AlixPartners, Alvarez & Marsal, and FTI Consulting.
    • These firms often work on debtor/creditor side engagements, providing advisory services during financial distress situations.
  3. Interview Process:

    • The interview process for BRG and similar consulting firms typically involves multiple rounds, including:
      • Behavioral interviews to assess cultural fit and communication skills.
      • Technical interviews focusing on financial modeling, valuation, and case studies related to restructuring scenarios.
  4. Job Role:

    • The job role at BRG would involve working on restructuring cases, financial advisory, and possibly litigation support.
    • Tasks may include financial analysis, creating restructuring plans, and advising clients on strategic decisions during distress situations.
  5. Exit Opportunities:

    • Exit opportunities from BRG and similar firms can be diverse, including:
      • Transitioning to traditional restructuring IB roles at firms like Houlihan Lokey (HL) or Lazard.
      • Moving into corporate finance roles within distressed companies.
      • Opportunities in private equity, particularly in distressed or special situations funds.

Assuming you got offered - did you end up taking it? If so hows it going so far?

Thank you for your reply. How was the application process? Did you apply online or by referral? Coming from Rx already or trying to get in?
